The Birmingham Americans were charter members of the in 1974. They won that league's championship, World Bowl I, and as it turned out, only. Immediately after the game, a 22-21 win over the , the team's uniforms were confiscated by sheriff's deputies to settle the teams debts. The team returned in 1975 with new ownership and a new name, Vulcans, in the "new" WFL. However, the Vulcans, and the rest of the league folded halfway through the season.
